Innovations for YONEX SUNRISE BWF World Junior Championships 2025

Wednesday 4 June 2025

Dear Members and Continental Confederations,

The Badminton World Federation (BWF), in collaboration with the Badminton Association of India (BAI), can announce exciting innovations that will be implemented at the YONEX SUNRISE BWF World Junior Championships 2025 in Guwahati, India this October.

The BWF thanks BAI for its progressive and modern approach in collaborating on measures showcasing the championships as a forward-thinking event promoting innovation for badminton.

This is part of the BWF’s wider long-term considerations for innovation in events and event delivery. The broader goal remains to modernise badminton in ways that protect athlete wellbeing while making the sport even more exciting and engaging for global audiences.

Relay Best of Three Sets to 45

The BWF Council approved the testing of the following new relay system at the YONEX SUNRISE BWF World Junior Team Championships 2025:

  • Best of three sets where a team who reaches 45 points in relay format wins a set; and
  • A set is composed of matches compromised of one of each event (men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles).

Full details, including regulations and operational procedures, will be communicated to Members in the coming weeks.

A virtual workshop for team managers and other stakeholders will be held prior to their participation in the YONEX SUNRISE BWF World Junior Team Championships 2025.

The testing of this new relay format is part of BWF Council’s innovation objective for the longer term.

Test of 3 x 15 Scoring System

The BWF Council also approved the use of the 3 x 15 scoring system at the YONEX SUNRISE BWF World Junior Championships 2025.

This is part of the overall testing programme which includes stakeholder surveys and match data collection.
