BWF LINE JUDGES

BWF Line Judges

BWF decided in 2009 to organise the Line Judges with the purpose to recognize the International Line Judges (ILJs) and their important contribution to the game.

The Continental Confederations were invited to put forward nominations for ILJs based on a paper agreed by the BWF Council (enclosed), and most did so.

Following a discussion in the 2009 AGM, the project was shelved for one year. In May 2010 it was agreed to review and revitalise the effort to organise the BWF ILJs.

You are therefore requested to reconfirm or revise your previous nominations before 1st August 2010. It is then intended to start from 1st January 2011.

Since 2009 BWF received and responded to several questions from Member Associations and Line Judges. Many were already answered in the Council paper, while others are answered in the second paper enclosed.

Let me emphasize the words of the preamble to the Council paper.

"Badminton World Federation

  • Recognize the unique and important role that Line Judges are given in the Laws of badminton and the ecommendation to Technical Officials
  • Gratefully acknowledge the important contribution to international badminton, which is, for many years has been, and hopefully also in future shall be paid to the game by volunteer Line Judges, often at their own, considerable expense,
  • Consider the importance of fair, firm and unbiased line calls for the integrity of the game,
  • Carefully considers the financial implications for BWF and other organizers by introducing more officials to serve the international game."

Badminton is simple - and difficult. So is line judging.

 Yours sincerely

Torsten Berg - Chair

BWF Technical Officials Commission
